Make Yourself a Priority

Many people find they are about fifth or sixth on their priority list, which is one of the greatest roadblocks to healthy living. This is especially true for mothers and caregivers who are accustomed to placing other people's needs first.
<"You can't take care of anyone else well if you don't take care of yourself."
How often have you heard that? If you are one of those people who short changes themselves, one of your top goals for 2007 will be to make yourself a priority, if you are serious about making life style changes in the effort to live a healthy, happy life.
If the idea of taking time for yourself fills you with feelings of guilt or you find a million excuses coming to your head why you can't take time for you, you will want to start making time for yourself slowly.
Begin by making a list of the things you enjoy. It could be smelling the fresh scent of lemon, going for a walk, sitting on your porch swing or taking a nap. It could be shopping or going to a movie. It could be anything at all.
Next, determine how many minutes per day you can set aside to do something enjoyable just for you. Maybe you have more time available some days than others. Sometimes you may even only have a few minutes available to do something for you. That's okay.
p>The point is that starting a new habit of self-care, which brings about joy in your life, however small, will help you develop a sense of self-worth. Over time, you will find that taking the time for self-care will become easier and even more enjoyable. Once you begin to feel better about doing things for yourself, for your benefit, the desire to take better care of your health physically, mentally and emotionally will become a priority because you will be living out the belief that you deserve to take good care of yourself.
