Weight Loss Secret For Success #2 - Fiber Supplements

By Naomi Jackson
To consume enough food to achieve the recommended amount of fiber (25 to 40 grams) each day, we would all be the size of house boats! Clearly, if you are one of those millions of people trying to lose weight, getting enough fiber in your diet is an even greater challenge
The answer to providing your body with the appropriate amount of fiber each and every day is fiber supplements.
Fiber supplements are not the same as fiber laxatives. Fiber supplements give your body the additional fiber it isn't able to obtain from the food you consume. Yes, the additional fiber will help your bowels to move more frequently and with greater ease, but without harsh chemicals playing a role in the natural process of digesting, metabolizing, and eliminating the foods you consume.
My personal preference is psyllium husk. Psyllium husk is the form of fiber contained in Metamucil. You can also find generic forms of psyllium husk right in your grocery store. This supplement comes in either powder or capsule form. The bottle usually says, "Fiber Therapy". Remember to avoid, "Fiber Laxative".
One could say fiber is the "magic bullet" of weight loss. If you take, for example, psyllium capsules before each of your meals with a large glass of water, the fiber absorbs water, giving you a full feeling, which helps decrease the tendency to overeat.
Additionally, the fiber wraps itself around fats and slows down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. This is important for many reasons starting with the fact that our bodies are only able to metabolize one teaspoon of sugar per meal. Most carbohydrates, such as breads and pastas, have much more than one teaspoon of sugar so, where do you think it goes? It is stored as fat in the adipose tissue of the body, usually in the abdomen, hips and thighs!
By slowing down the absorption of sugar in the blood stream, your body is better able to metabolize the foods you consume. It also give you a full, satisfied feeling for longer periods in between meals because it slows down the digestive process, which can help reduce the need to eat between meals.
For fiber to work, you must drink approximately 8 to 10 glasses of water each day. Drinking a large glass of water with your fiber supplement before each meal is one way to knock out at least 3 glasses easily! Start slow by taking 1 or 2 fiber capsules and see how you feel. Your body will let you know how many capsules work best for you. Usually 4 to 5 capsules per meal is the maximum. And as always, check with your physician to make sure you do not have any medical conditions that would be negatively affected by increasing your daily fiber intake.
Most of my clients have found adding fiber to each meal has dramatically aided their weight loss efforts. Remember, nothing takes the place of eating right and exercising, but adding fiber supplements to ensure you are receiving the appropriate amount of fiber in you diet is another step in taking care of you.
See you slim and healthy,
Naomi
